Civil Weddings

A civil service in Italy gives you a fully legal marriage certificate. You will be asked to declare, and prove, your status as free to marry, and will perform a brief service, concluding with the exchange of rings.

Is the legal ceremony recognized in other countries ?

Yes. The Wedding certificate is a multilingual certificate that is recognized and legal in any country. A registration of the document may be required in your country.

Can I marry outside in a civil ceremony ?

Usually not. In Italy a Civil service usually takes place INSIDE in the town hall or property purchased by the local government. Usually these are unique palaces, villas and manors representative of the settings.

Some towns allow Weddings outside, but still in specially approved areas. A good example of exception is Weddings in Positano.

Can I get married on a Saturday ? Can I get married any time of the year ?

Please have a look at more information on when to get married in Italy.

Who performs the civil ceremony ?

The ceremony is performed by the local Mayor or functionary. He or she wears a wide band representative of the colours of the Italian flag. He or she speaks Italian, which is translated by our interpreter.

How long does the civil ceremony last ?

The readings of the civil vows are usually about 15 to 20 minutes. Readings are usually in Italian, but are translated by our interpreters.

What are the ceremony vows like ?

It contains of a mix between the traditional vows ("do you take Martha to be your lawful wedded wife etc..."). Also, the Mayor reads various articles relative to marriage, the family and the couple in general. It is not an "honour and obey" type vow.

How far ahead should I start my paperwork ?

Ideally paperwork should be started six months before your Wedding. Paperwork depends on the nationality of both spouses AND the specific location that you have chosen. In some cases we will prepare all paperwork remotely upfront, and you will simply show up the day of the Wedding. In some other cases the process is longer. For example if you are American you will be required to visit an Italian consulate with witnesses in your country to generate some of the paperwork, then show up in Italy three days before the Wedding in an American consulate, which may require a plane trip to a city different from the one you will get married in.

Matrimoniando will guide you through the process and accompany you to the various offices when in Italy to help you with the paperwork.

Your Personal Wedding Planner will be able to advice and guide you depending on your specific location and  nationality.

How far ahead should I arrive in Italy for a Civil Wedding  ?

It depends on the specific location for your Wedding and your nationality. In some cases you simply show up the day of the Wedding, in some other cases you will have to be in Italy a few days in advance to allow time to complete your paperwork.

Your Personal Wedding Planner will be able to advice and guide you depending on your specific location and nationality.
