Catholic Weddings In Italy, the church and the state don't have the same form of collaboration that is usual in the US or the UK. Generally, in all Church weddings performed in Italy, the couple will have performed a separate civil service, normally with a Justice of the Peace in their home town. Some priests, however, will agree to have Civil and Religious weddings at the same time. The wedding blessing is identical to a full wedding service, and has the same religious significance. Can I have a Catholic ceremony outside ? In Italy a Catholic ceremony can only be performed in a Church. If one of us is Protestant can I still get married ? Yes, absolutely. As long as you attend the required pre-marital (pre Cana) classes and have the paperwork approved by the local priest in Italy (some priests will refuse to celebrate mixed weddings). Can I marry again if my previous matrimony has been annulled ? Yes, provided the annullment is recognized by the Catholic Church. Can I marry again if I am divorced ? No, a divorce will not allow you to re-marry in a Catholic Church. You must have an annullment. How far ahead do I need to plan my Catholic Wedding ? We require a month as absolute minimum to give the priest and archbishop in Italy time to review the paperwork. Will it be a full mass ? It depends on your preference and the priest. Generally yes.
